FOUNDER

Kernersville auto museum

Jim Taylor is the founder of Kernersville Auto Museum which was his dream for many years.

The seed was planted back during the 1950’s when Jim sold his tobacco crop.  After paying all his bills and buying his clothes for the upcoming school year, all that was left to purchase his first car was $75.  During that time, a Model A Ford was about all Jim could find for that amount; so, a 1931 Model A Ford was located and purchased.

Many of Jim’s friends in the community thought it was cool to own an old car, so they all set out searching the countryside over for Model A Fords.  After about six months, five of his closest friends had located old Model A’s.  Jim and his friends would caravan to ball games on Friday nights and occasionally take trips to the Blue Ridge Parkway on Sunday afternoons.

As the years passed, the Model A was traded for a more modern vehicle, but Jim always wondered what happened to his beloved Model A and many times had dreams and thoughts of trying to locate it.

During the middle of the 1980’s, the company that Jim worked for had business in London, England.  While spending a few nights at Woodstock [Winston Churchill’s Home Town], he discovered a beautiful little English Austin that he fell in love with–unfortunately for Jim, the owner would not consider selling.

As fate would have it, some two weeks later during a visit to Blowing Rock, NC, another 1934 Austin was parked on the street with a “For Sale” sign in the window.  Needless to say, the purchase was made immediately!  Thus, the seed that was planted in the mid 1950’s with the Model A now began to germinate.

Over the next 35 years, that little Austin brought on Jim’s buying many more Vintage & Classic Cars and yes, another Model A Ford.

In recent years, Jim observed at local Classic Car Auctions that so many cars were being sold to go overseas.  He began to feel very strongly about preserving not only his own collection, but others as well.  That’s when he set out to find a facility that could house 50 or so Vintage &Antique Classic Cars.  After several years with no success in locating a facility, Jim decided that buying property and building a facility was the only way this was going to happen.

In 2020, Jim located 2 acres on Old Winston Road that was a perfect fit.  The property was purchased and rezoned, with construction beginning in March of 2021 and completed in March of 2022.  In April of 2022, the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce hosted a Ribbon-Cutting ceremony and we were open for business.
